The first test: alpha

Long before anyone could download Hopick, the app existed in a much smaller room. No store listing, no landing page, no announcement. Just a handful of people who had agreed to use something unfinished, and the questions that only real use can answer.
A test with a tiny guest list
We called it the alpha. It was never designed to be big. A small circle of people, mostly people we already knew, ran the app on their phones and told us what broke. That's the whole job at that stage: find what breaks while there are still only a few people around to see it.
This kind of testing has a particular texture. There's no reputation to protect, so you can be honest about how rough things are. You send someone a build on a Tuesday, they send back a screenshot of something strange on a Wednesday, and you fix it before the weekend. The feedback loop is short and personal, which makes it fast in a way that later stages can't match.
What we were really testing
A list of bugs is the obvious output, but it's not the useful one. The useful thing about the alpha was learning what the first testers reached for on their own. Which posts they stopped to read, which features they never touched, how they talked about the app to a friend in a sentence. That told us more about the product than any bug report.
Two things came out of those early months that we've carried ever since. The first is that people here wanted to talk in Cantonese — not as a language setting they switched on, but as the natural way to open the app. The second is that control mattered from day one: the power to decide who you see and who can reach you. Neither of these was a headline feature. Both shaped how the app was built from then on.
Why it mattered
An alpha doesn't prove a product works. It proves you're willing to keep going when it doesn't. By the time we opened the doors a little wider, the app had already been used, argued with, and repaired. That's what gave the next stage a foundation to stand on.
